Hi all, I've been away for awhile and terribly behind on my comments and posts but I have been working on a very big (big and BIG) project :) I was hired to make this 30' (10m) tree prop for the Grammys. It's actually sculpted in relief so it's no thicker than 3 feet but 20' across.

It's a set piece for a country song (can't remember who's singing). I worked with some great welders even tho I'm beat tired now and sore all over it was a great project (finished today!)

It's a welded steel frame with styrofoam attached on a plywood base. We guess about 600 pounds and I did the drawings designs and sculpting in a week. Here you can see she actually does stand up (with the help of a bunch of stage hands and a crane ;) Let me know if you spot her at the Grammys!

That is sweet. Freaking huge. I'd be worried it would get broken while those guys were moving it though.
You know, every time you post something like this, I always wonder how you manged to land such an awesome gig. Like, does everyone in show biz know you as the go-to prop guy?

Oh don't worry, they did break it.. It took hours to fix it up. Then the stage hands at the theatre broke it again when they hung it... again I came in to fix it today. It's kind of a process XD
I've just being doing this for long enough that i've worked for a lot of people and not let them down. So when someone is on a production and they ask who can make this stuff... my name often comes up.

ooo spifferific. and HUUUooogemungous!!!

We did a show some years back with a large black steel tree, Madonna I think. man that thing was heavy.

and tippy.

still the steel construction was fortunate, the stage was built on the far end of the arena then tree built on top of the rolling stage, while rigging was being set on other end. when stage was being rolled into place tree decided it was time for a nap and tipped with a thud. no damage and no one hurt, just awkward to get it back up. after righting it and 60 some sand bags around it later it finished its move.

Glad to see ya back.

We made sure that didn't happen, we can't go flattening singers now can we? the "grassy knoll" that the tree locks into is weighted with two tons. the tree base is four inch steel tube right up the middle. Heavy but it does't wiggle and two people can roll it around.

good stuff. 2 tons? yeah no movement there. Honestly, I think the tree we had would have been fine if it hadn't been on the stage while the stage was moved.
can't wait to see the next devious little project you get to work on.

Good times to ya Tim.
